Sustainable development, triple bottom line accounting, ethical investment these words are becoming more common in todays world. People in successful organisations now understand that environmental and social integrity is more than just public relations. There is not just a moral obligation to become environmentally sustainable. In the long run its the only way business can survive. After all sustainability means just that. Survival. The efficient use of energy and resources boosts a companys profits and benefits the environment. Coupled with improved employee moral and enhanced public profile these are serious reasons why todays business people should explore the potential of sustainability.
From large enterprises to the
running of a household, the Northern Rivers Sustainable Industry Expo will
explore ways to make a positive change in our environment, our life styles
and the way we do business. A major philosophy behind this event is that environmental
responsibility is not a luxury that we indulge in if we can afford it but
a necessity, that need not eat into our budget nor make our lives more difficult.
The inaugural Northern Rivers Sustainable Industry Expo was held in
June 2002 in Lismore, northern NSW. Following its outstanding success, planning
is under way for an even bigger and better event in 2003. The Expo is organised
by the Big Scrub Environment Centre, a non profit community organisation that
has been working on environmental issues in this region for over 15 years.
The 2003 Sustainable Industry
Expo will be held between August 13th and 17th in conjunction with the Northern
Rivers Herb Festival. The Herb Festival is quickly becoming the premiere festival
in the Northern Rivers region, adding value to the emerging medicinal herb
and bush food industry. The Herb Festival has attracted over 25 000 people
in total since its inception in 2000. Togethor we hope to create an event
that will showcase the unique and diverse approaches to sustainability in
the Northern Rivers region.
