Humanity Faces
'Revenge of Gaia"
by Michael McCarthy, London
- 17.01.06
The world has already passed
the point of no return for climate change, and civilisation
is now unlikely to survive, according to the scientist who
conceived Gaia theory - the Earth as a living, breathing
organism. In a profoundly pessimistic new assessment, Professor
James Lovelock suggests that efforts to counter global warming
cannot succeed, and that, in effect, it is already too late.
The world and human society face disaster to a worse extent,
and on a faster timescale, than almost anybody realises,
he predicts.

Climate Change
An article written by Alan
Roberts for The Big Scrub Environment Centre Newsletter s
Autumn/Winter 2005
Its up to us people... are we prepared to expend strenuous
human effort to establish a bright new sustainable era or
will we allow business as usual to beguile us
into chaos, more drastic climate change and extinction?

collectively. |

Renewable Energy Sources
Renewable energy and energy efficiency can deliver the power
we need without the problems. Renewable energy, mostly
hydroelectricity, already supplies 19% of world electricity,
compared to nuclears 16%. The share of renewables is
increasing, while nuclears share is decreasing.

Green Electricity
You now have the power to
invest in the future. By choosing genuinely renewable electricity
you will be helping to reduce Australias unsustainably
high greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the threat of human-induced
climate change. You will also be helping to create jobs and
investment in the fastest growing industry sector in Australia
renewable energy.

No Solution to Climate
Change
Nuclear power is currently unlawful under the 1998 Australian
Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act, while Victoria
and New South Wales also have legislation banning nuclear
power and nuclear waste storage and disposal. Three other
states South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern
Territory have legal prohibitions against various forms
of radioactive waste transportation and dumping.

Peak Oil
Excerpts from an article by Tim
Winton:
In the past year the term 'Peak
Oil' has left the confines of a small but committed community
of peak oil analysts and leapt into the mainstream press.
Analysts are warning that peak oil will be the defining event
of this century and will rival climate change as the focus
of sustainability, and that the world as we know it will change
in a very short time. Peak oil, the dark twin of climate changerequires
the understanding of a few unfamiliar concepts.

North Coast Climate
Action Group
is a grassroots campaign to empower
people and push the political process from the bottom up.
Our aim is to demonstrate how individual and collective actions
can make a difference. The choices that we make now have implications
